Coating Maintenance

Powder coating is known for its incredible durability and resistance to chipping, scratching, and fading. However, like any high-quality finish, it requires regular care to maintain its pristine appearance and protective properties over time.

Whether it's architectural aluminium, outdoor furniture, or industrial equipment, following a simple maintenance routine can significantly extend the life of your powder-coated surfaces.

1. Regular Cleaning is Key

Accumulation of dirt, grime, and salt deposits can trap moisture against the metal, potentially leading to corrosion over time. Regular cleaning prevents this build-up.

How to Clean:

  • Use mild soap and warm water: A gentle dish soap mixed with warm water is usually sufficient.
  • Use a soft sponge or cloth: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or steel wool, which can scratch the finish.
  • Rinse thoroughly: Ensure all soap residue is washed away with fresh water.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Solvents, thinners, and harsh cleaners can damage the powder coating, causing it to dull, soften, or peel.

  • Avoid products containing acetone, ketones, or thinners.
  • Do not use highly acidic or alkaline cleaners.
  • If you must use a strong cleaner for potential stains, test it on a small, hidden area first.

3. Address Scratches Immediately

While powder coating is scratch-resistant, deep scratches that penetrate to the bare metal can become starting points for corrosion.

If you notice deep scratches, touch them up immediately with a matching paint or a repair kit supplied by your coater (like Glazecoats). This seals the surface and restores protection.

4. Periodic Inspection

Inspect your powder-coated items every 6 months, or more frequently in coastal or industrial environments.

Look for:

  • Signs of chalking (a powdery residue on the surface due to UV exposure).
  • Cracks or chips in the coating.
  • Accumulation of salt or dirt in crevices.

5. Protective Waxing

For outdoor furniture or architectural elements exposed to intense sunlight and weather, applying a light coat of high-quality non-abrasive car wax can provide an extra layer of UV and moisture protection.
